ROBBEN ISLAND TOUR

Enjoy a ½ hour ferry ride from the Waterfront to the one place in the world that symbolises the struggle for freedom against oppression of basic human rights. A trip to this island prison where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years is a truly memorable experience.

Measuring less than 2 km wide and 3.5 km in length, lying 10 km north of Green Point and 6 km from Blaauwberg lies Robben Island. A barren outcrop of rock and sand sparsely vegetated like a hardened and wizened old man barring the years of angst and pain of those wrecked sailors, lepers and political prisoners of which it was for years their only home. For years South Africa’s Alcatraz, now standing as a reminder of past years of oppression and now a symbol of freedom and a hard fought for democracy.
